In March 2014, the Israel Navy intercepted an alleged Iranian weapons ship in the Red Sea near Sudan. The navy later displayed captured missiles and other weapons with Iranian markings.
Teheran has insisted that its presence in the Red Sea focused on counter-piracy operations. In 2008, Somali pirates captured an Iranian cargo ship off the coast of Yemen.
