FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 15, 2013 (Paris, France) – IranNewsUpdate.com – Simultaneous to the Iranian presidential election, Iran News Update has learned that Camp Liberty, which houses more than 3,000 Iranian people in Iraq, has been attacked by the Iranian Regime with more than 40 missiles resulting in two casualties and more than 50 injuries.

“I can confirm that there was a deadly attack,” said UN spokeswoman Eliana Nabaa, “We don’t have the figures but yes, people were killed and injured.”

Camp Liberty houses more than 3,000 members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), an organization of Iranian opposition, in Iraq.

Two deaths have been reported in the attack including one woman, Mrs. Kolthoum Sarahati and Mr. Javad Naghashan, member of the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization.

More than 50 other injuries have occurred as a result of today’s missile attack and more than 33 wounded victims have been transferred to Baghdad Hospital. Many bunkers and facilities in Camp Liberty have been severely damaged and one bunker was hit and completely destroyed.

This simultaneous attack with the Iranian Regime’s sham election and its nationwide boycott by the Iranian people is a clear indication that dictatorial regime in Tehran views the Iranian Resistance as the cause and active agent in the boycotted election.

The attack on the camp near Baghdad airport in Iraq comes four months after the camp was struck by missiles on February 9, 2013 and also after repeated warnings from international bodies that it could be attacked again.

This is the third missile attack on Camp Liberty since February 9, 2013. During the past four months, residents of Camp Liberty and many international organizations have demanded that the refugees be returned to Camp Ashraf, which can provide basic security. The camp’s residents have called on the Government of Iraq, the United Nations and the U.S. government to provide basic security by providing T-walls and transferring hard hats and protective vests from other camps. The Government of Iraq has rejected all requests on multiple occasions.
