White House and Congress at Odds over Iran Sanction Act, other Enforcement

On Tuesday, an editorial in US News and World recalled attention to the incident last month in which General Hossein Salami, the deputy commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that Iran would close the Strait of Hormuz in response to anything that the Iranian leadership might regard as “threats.” The editorial notes that the likely response to such threats is dismissal. And indeed, Iran News Update previously reported that many independent military analysts find that Iran does not have the naval strength to actually enforce such a closure.

Hope for Internal Moderation Fades after Election of Head of Assembly of Experts

INU -On Tuesday, it was reported that Ahmad Jannati a notoriously hardline and anti-Western cleric, had been elected to the head of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, the governmental body of religious scholars who are tasked with overseeing the supreme leader and selecting a new one in the event of his death or abdication. It is widely expected that the current Assembly will have the opportunity to appoint a successor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who is 77 years old and reportedly in poor health.

New Bans Take Aim at Alleged Western Influence in Iran

On Wednesday, Fox News reported that a video game featuring a purportedly accurate depiction of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution had been banned by the clerical government after being characterized as “anti-Iranian” and “pro-America propaganda.” Fox News had previously reported upon the development and April release of the game, titled “1979 Revolution: Black Friday.” The lead designer and Iranian expatriate Navid Khonsari has reportedly received praise for translating the real historical event into a playable scenario that reflects the real-life accounts of dozens of people who were present during the revolution.

Critics Highlight Iran’s Domestic Affairs to Discourage Expanded Trade

INU - On Wednesday, CNN reported upon the extension of a controversy that was previously thought to be resolved between Air France and its employees. The union for the commercial airline’s cabin crews recently won a concession from the company over its plans to resume regular flights to Iran in the current, post-sanctions environment. Air France announced that female members of the cabin crew would be able to opt out of flights into the Islamic Republic, over concerns about the country’s laws requiring a specific dress code for women, including head coverings.

Khamenei Claims Victory in “Soft War,” Ignores Ongoing Challenges

Iran May Rely on Russia to Expand Weapons Stockpile and Presence in Syria

INU - As Iran News Update reported on Monday, the long-delayed delivery of Russia’s advanced S-300 missiles to Iran has apparently begun at last. A Russian Foreign Ministry official reported earlier this month that the first shipments were being prepared, and now Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hossein Jaber Ansari says that those first shipments have arrived.
