Iran Nuclear Proposals: Not Enough, or Too Much?

INU - The issue of Iran’s human rights record was raised by chief US nuclear negotiator Wendy Sherman in her latest comments about the talks between Iran and the P5+1. The various parties had been meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly this week, and Sherman reports that talks between Iran and the US “boil down to two things”: the nuclear issue and the Americans imprisoned in Iran, namely Pastor Saeed Abedini, former Marine Amir Hekmati, and Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian.

Iran’s Military Celebrations Highlight Dubious Claims of Advancement

INU - On Tuesday, September 23, Iranian state media announced that the country’s military was unveiling a new model of missile-equipped drone. Deputy Foreign Secretary General Amir Hatami was quoted by Fars news agency as saying that “the research, experimentation, and testing phases have been completed” and that the aircraft are prepared to go into service to add to Iranian air defenses.

US Undermines its Own Exports through Iran Sanctions Relief

 In June, the United States softened legal restrictions on the export of its own crude oil, which were put into place in the 1970s during the Arab oil embargo. In July, the US released 2.8 billion additional dollars to Iran as an incentive to continue nuclear negotiations, thus continuing a policy of sanctions relief that began late last year when Iran first came to the negotiating table.
