EXTENSION OF NUCLEAR TALKS AND THE FALL OUT

Just as most observers of the nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 had come to expect, the deadline for negotiations was extended over the weekend, as permitted by the interim agreement that would otherwise have expired on Sunday. Reactions to this development are predictably diverse, expressing new iterations of the optimism that has characterized the Obama administration’s approach, the hawkishness that has dominated much of the US Congress, and the skillful balance of stubbornness and diplomatic charm that seems to define Iranian strategy during negotiations.

 In Rouhani’s government the policy of meddling in other countries and exporting terrorism and fundamentalism has intensified each day.

 The US State Department recently reported that the Iranian regime remains a major supporter of terrorism and continues to challenge requests to prove its nuclear ambitions are peaceful. The State Department added that Tehran is pressing its support of Palestinian terrorist groups and strengthening its presence in Africa, and attempting to smuggle weapons to separatists in Yemen and Bahrain.

Little Scrutiny for Rising Iranian Oil Exports

Nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 have passed their original deadline on Sunday, and are now headed towards a new deadline in late November. The wisdom of this extension is now being scrutinized by many analysts and policymakers, who are considering questions regarding the extent of Iranian compliance with the process so far, and the amount of leverage that the US has retained and shown willingness to exert in the coming months.

Repression and execution have intensified under Hassan Rouhani’s tenure, provoking immense international concerns.

 1. Execution

On March 16, 2014, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon expressed concerns over the soaring rate of executions in Iran – including as many as 675 last year – and said in a report to the UN Human Rights Council,“The new government has not changed its approach regarding the application of the death penalty and seems to have followed the practice of previous administrations, which relied heavily on the death penalty to combat crime.”

Iran Nuclear: Has Iran “Met its Commitments”?

Numerous new outlets reported on Thursday that US President Barack Obama had joined with other officials and diplomats, including Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, in calling for an extension to the nuclear negotiations between Iran and the P5+1. Mr. Obama said, despite persistent gaps between Iranian and US positions, “It's clear to me that we have made real progress in several areas and that we have a credible way forward.”
