Veto-Proof Sanctions on Iran

INU- Amid opening of the 114 congress, there is support for increasing sanctions on Iran in the new Republican-controlled US Congress to override veto threats by President Obama according to news reports. The Obama administration and other global powers are in negotiation with Tehran to convince the regime to give up its nuclear program. All the while, the White House has tried to make sure no law is passed in the US Congress for more sanctions so talks can continue unhindered.

Iran: Nuclear Deal Prospects Influenced From Multiple Angles

INU- The Times of Israel reported on Wednesday that despite this week’s news of a seven month extension of nuclear negotiations, some or all of the six powers involved in the process will be pushing for a faster conclusion. A senior European diplomat made a statement to this effect in the media, and it reflects persistent optimism about negotiations that critics say have led to very little tangible progress.

This fact was on display on Friday when a Twitter account associated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed to show Iranian forces alongside Lebanese Hezbollah near the Israeli border.

Despite Evidence, Iran Denies Human Rights Abuses and Regional Inteference

INU - On Friday, Turkish Weekly reported that Mohammad Javad Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights, had taken to Iranian television to deny the country’s various human rights abuses. This came shortly after Iran denied entry into the country for Ahmed Shaheed, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran.
