United States and International Community Need to Support People of Iran to Pressure Malign Regime

The Iranian regime is becoming more and more belligerent as time goes on. Many presidents and administration officials over the past few decades have called for patience, saying that the regime would become more moderate, especially if concessions were granted. However, the time has finally come, at last, for the world to realise that the regime is completely incapable of becoming more moderate. In fact, its mere existence depends on the export of terror and fundamentalism.

The Iranian Resistance has been warning the international community this for decades. For the past few decades since the 1979 revolution, the people have been denied the most basic of freedoms. In 1981, the leader of the MEK Massoud Rajavi called on the people to make their discontent with regards to their lack of freedom known. And the people did – millions of people across the country took to the streets. Thousands of people were arrested and dozens killed in a response by the Supreme Leader Khomeini that just reinforced the people’s reason for being in the street in the first place.

The people of Iran are still battling for their freedom and they are openly calling for regime change. They know that it is the only way in which they can secure a better future.

The people of Iran are the key to changing the whole dynamics of their country, and the region. They are undoubtedly going to be the main force behind the regime’s eventual collapse. It is for this reason that the United States, as part of its maximum pressure campaign, should voice its support for the people of Iran.

Mike Pence, Vice President of the United States, has already indicated that this is this is the way forward. He said at the end of last month: “What we want to do is stand with the Iranian people, thousands of whom gathered outside the White House on Friday, and thousands of whom took to the streets last year in communities across Iran.”

Pressuring the Iranian regime is working. The economic consequences have been remarkable and the regime has had to cut funding for many of its proxy groups across the region, most notably the Lebanese Hezbollah group.

Further sanctions on the regime’s main organisations and individuals should continue. Most importantly, the office of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei should be designated as a foreign terrorist organisation (FTO) so that its activities are hampered.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) that has been carrying out extensive operations outside the country, in particular in Europe, should also be designated as an FTO.

The Iranian regime knows that it should be concerned about the strength of the organised resistance in the country. It has previously tried to deny its significance, claiming that it has very little support both inside and outside of the country. However, it has been impossible to main this claim, as evidenced by the regime’s continued brutality against members of the opposition.
