Brussels, April 19, 2024 – The Belgian Senate unanimously passed a resolution condemning the Iranian regime’s human rights violations and calling for international action.

The resolution, citing a rise in executions, urges Belgium, currently holding the presidency of the European Union, to take several steps:

  • Halt Executions: The resolution demands immediate measures to prevent the execution of thousands of prisoners, including political prisoners.
  • Accountability for Abuses: It calls for holding Iranian leadership responsible for “four decades of crimes against humanity and genocide.”
  • Support for Iranian People: The resolution expresses support for the Iranian people’s right to resist the government and pursue a “democratic and secular republic.”
  • Designating the IRGC as Terrorist Organization: The resolution urges classifying Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This designation, the resolution argues, would allow other countries to penalize those who provide material support to the IRGC.

The move by the Belgian Senate highlights growing international concern about human rights in Iran.
