According tothis report, the province of Ilam has the highest suicide rate followed by the provinces of Lorestan, Khuzestan, Kermanshah, Golestan, and Kohgiloyeh and Boyer Ahmad. Based on this report, Iranians in the18 to 24 year age group are committing suicide at an alarming rate.

HadiMotamedi, psychiatrist and faculty member of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation of the University of Tehran, said that the main reason for the increasing rate of youth suicide is the “wrong population policies in the past, disregarding the needs of this class of society.”

Motamedi continued:

“Economic factors such as poverty, unemployment, deprivation, and job insecurity, and social factors such as population growth, migration, war, discrimination, illiteracy and problems related to marriage are important factors in causing mental instability and suicide.”
