Babak Zanjani, Zarrab’s boss, has been sentenced to death in Iran because he cannot explain a multi-billion dollar discrepancy in accounts with regards to trade made for the former Mahmoud Ahmadinejad administration.
There are questions about Turkey’s move towards Iran and Russia, but the biggest issue right now for the United States is Iran.
The Trump administration is undergoing a very challenging time. The U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced his resignation during the Mediterranean Dialogues Forum at the end of last week, surprising many, but coming as no surprise to many others.
There have been rumours that the head of the CIA, Mike Pompeo, will replace Tillerson and Senator Tom Cotton would replace Pompeo.
One of the major points of contention in the Trump administration is the subject of Iran. It caused a rift between many members. Some believe that Trump has been too hard or is overpromising, whereas others agree that Trump needs to continue with the tough rhetoric.
Cotton and Pompeo have both talked about regime change in Iran and it is something that many believe should happen in Iran.
This would not be the first time that the United States would intervene to bring regime change to Iran. In 1953, the United States and the United Kingdom, helped overthrow Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh.
Leaders in Europe are slightly more hesitant to say too much about Iran. At the Mediterranean Dialogues Forum, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said that the EU wants to ensure that the Iran nuclear deal remains intact and said that the main priority is its implementation.
At the same forum in Rome, the chairwoman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People’s Congress of the U.N. Security Council’s permanent member China Ying Fu said that the nuclear deal is effective and must be linked to the North Korean threat.
Sergei Lavrov, the foreign minister for Russia, however, said that Iran is complying with the nuclear deal and that the United States decides otherwise, then it is the United States that will be in violation of the deal. He also warned that North Korea would see the US as a very unreliable and untrustworthy player if it were to pull out.
Iran’s support from the EU, China and Russia just highlights how much of a threat it really is. It is fuelling chaos across the Middle East with the intention of becoming a regional power. It is fuelling civil wars that are causing nothing but devastation and destruction and it is neglecting its own people in favour of terrorism.
