INU - Dozens of miners killed, injured

A large explosion shook a coal mine in Golestan Province, northern Iran, due to excessive gas and leakage, and a poor ventilation system. This explosion left at least 35 people killed and dozens injured. A total of 34 miners have been trapped in the mine and many of the injured are suffering from severe gas infections.

This mine is located 90 kilometers north of the town of Azadshahr and 500 miners were working in this site.

“This mine had horizontal tunnels and the explosion took place in a 1,000 meter long tunnel. The blockage is around 1,000 meters from the opening,” said Jafar Sargheini, deputy Industry Minister.

“Financial problems led to the lack of safety precautions in this coal mine. The miners were continuously negotiating about their demands, let alone equipping their mine with proper safety measures,” said Ramezan Bahrami, head of the House of Industry and Mines in Golestan Province.
