Former U.S. intelligence officer becomes spy for Iran

When she first made it known to Iranian agents that she was defecting, she was able to boost her situation by providing intelligence about two U.S. intelligence programs that she had been involved with in which Iran was a target.

According to the indictment, Witt’s time as a contractor and as an AFOSI special agent had given her access to Secret and Top Secret information and she soon – after extensive vetting of course – became part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) offensive counterintelligence actions against the U.S.

She helped the IRGC develop “target packages” that Iran could use against USG agents. One way of doing so was for Witt to create false profiles on Facebook which would enable her to collect information of a personal nature about USG agents.

Four Iranian citizens are said to have assisted in this matter too with their role being described as instrumental in developing the malware that was used to collect vital information from the targets, including access to web cameras, the monitoring of computer activity and keystroke monitoring.

One of the fictitious personas was “Bella Wood” – a so-called former colleague of Witt. However, this persona failed because the target did not click on the attachment in the emails they were sent.

A further attempt, this time by duplicating a Facebook account of one of Witt’s former colleagues, also failed.

In March last year, nine Iranians were indicted for stealing intellectual property and sensitive data and compromising insiders in both private and public entities including universities and domestic and foreign private sector enterprises.

Iran’s use of cyber-attacks have been getting more and more sophisticated in recent years and experts and analysts in the field believe that Iran is the one to watch.

The nine Iranians that were indicted last year worked for the Iranian Mabna Institute that is affiliated with the IRGC. It is thought that the organisation has been attacking universities for a number of years – but it has been doing so under the radar so as not to draw attention to its activities.

In the attack that resulted int heir indictment, the hackers tried to steal users’ login details through spear phishing attacks. Thousands of university professors across the world fell victim to this attack.

Monica Witt is currently wanted for her activities on behalf of Iran’s intelligence agencies. She has provided information that has compromised assets working against Iran and has put a number of American clandestine intelligence officers at risk. She is damaging the United States and is participating in cyber-attacks and espionage campaigns.

Witt previously spoke about how she grew to despise the changing culture in the United States and started to respect the role of women in Iran. This is ironic because the strong women of Iran have been badly mistreated by the regime for decades.

They have lost more and more rights and are not given the respect or freedom they deserve. They can be commended for their activism and brave fight against the very authorities that Witt is working with.
