Is there a need to take military action against Iran?

There has been a heavy toll on the U.S. military in the past few decades under all of the recent administrations. The opinion of the majority is that no more people should risk adding to the tens of thousands of wounded and killed servicemen and women in recent history.

Furthermore, these Americans were not all killed or injured on the front lines of war. A large number of them were killed during peacekeeping efforts, humanitarian missions and rescue operations.

No-one wants a war with Iran, not least the Trump administration, contrary to what some believe. Many see the war on words that took place between President Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani a few days ago as an invitation to war. Trump very angrily told the Iranian president that Iran must remain cautious.

His message on social media read: “To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!”

Rather than saying that he is keen to start a war with Iran, it is more of a warning that he will do what he needs to do to protect the United States. He is saying that the United States will not sit back and accept provocation from Iran in the way the previous administration did. He is warning Iran that if the United States or its interests were in danger, he would respond.

Iran has renewed its threats to block the Strait of Hormuz if its oil gets blocked. Regime officials have explicitly said that if Iranian oil cannot pass, then no country’s oil will pass. Iran is threatening to do this because it wants foreign countries to be affected so that they can intervene and urge the Trump administration to change its policy. However, many are doubting that Iran has the actual capability to block the strait. Its technology is no match for that of the West, so would it even dare?

Since before even taking office, Trump has made it very clear that he will not be intimidated by Iran and that he will not accept its belligerence or any attacks.

In any case, war is not needed because the fall of the regime will happen naturally. The will of the people is enough if they are supported by the United States.
