Struan Stevenson: Europe Needs Strong Iran Policy

The October 23 conference, entitled “European policy vis-à-vis Iranian regime’s suppression and warmongering, the massacre of political prisoners in 1988”, was attended by politicians and dignitaries from across the continent and featured Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, as the keynote speaker.

Stevenson, who is the coordinator of the Campaign for Iran Change, told the conference that this new European Parliament, Commission, and High Representative for Foreign affairs, must end the “business-as-usual appeasement” and obtain “a clear understanding of the religious fascism regime ruling in Iran”.

Stevenson, a former member of the European Parliament and chair of the Friends of a Free Iran Intergroup, said:  “This is a regime that boasts about its missiles and that is racing to build nuclear weapons. This regime has slaughtered 120,000 people since 1979, and 30,000 people in the summer of 1988. The executions were carried out based on a fatwa by regime founder Ruhollah Khomeini. One of the key players was the current Iranian regime Justice Minister Alireza Avaei. He was appointed by Iranian regime President Hassan Rouhani, which the West regards as a ‘moderate’ president.”

Stevenson then began to explain about the regime’s oppressive treatment of women and children, noting that 97 women have been executed during the six-year reign of supposed moderate Hassan Rouhani and that at least eight juveniles were executed in the past year alone. He then moved onto the regime’s expansionist policies.

He said: “This is a regime whose policy is based on the strategy of expansionism. They support Bashar al-Assad in Syria, the Houthis in Yemen, and the brutal Shiite militias in Iraq. They are attacking ships in the waters of the Persian Gulf. They are using their embassies to coordinate terror attacks here in Europe.”

Stevenson said that the corrupt Iranian mullahs are stealing the Iranian people’s money and bankrupting the country in order to fund their terrorism and warmongering, citing that the Regime supports the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Shiite militias in Iraq, as well as attacking and seizing oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and attacking Saudi oil installations.

He said: “Iran is the most oppressive country in the Middle East. Mass protests against the fascist mullahs have been continuing for almost two years. During that time at least 45 people have been killed, around 2500 of the protesters have been arrested.”

Stevenson urged Europe to support the democratic Iranian opposition and its commitment to a republic based on “freedom, democracy, separation of religion and the state that will cherish human rights and women’s rights and gender equality

Other speakers at the conference included Czech MEP Jan Zahradil, Italian MEP Patrizia Toia, former Vice President of the European Parliament Alejo VidalQuadras, former Human Rights Minister of France Rama Yade and UK MEP Anthea McIntyre, among others.
