Tackling the Iranian regime issue

The threat from Iran is multidimensional so it makes sense that foreign policy takes this into account and a multidimensional strategy is put in place.

There has been much talk about the nuclear deal in recent weeks. There have been many discussions about Iran’s adherence, or non-adherence, to the terms of the agreement. There has also been a lot of debate about US President Donald Trump’s recent refusal to certify Iran’s compliance.

However, despite the many criticisms we could reproach President Trump for, we must recognise that he is taking the bull by the horns and actually acting to resolve the problem in the best and most comprehensive way possible.

Governments and world leaders have failed to tackle Iran policy successfully because they have failed to look at the whole issue. Iran does not just fund terrorism, or fire ballistic missiles, or work on a nuclear program. It does all of these and more. For example, it completely disregards the human rights of its own people.

There are some areas in which the international community have failed to act. One major area is that of Iran’s ballistic missile program. UN Security Council Resolution 2231 is in place to ban Iran from taking part in any activity that is related to ballistic missiles that have been made to carry nuclear weapons. This resolution includes banning Iran from carrying out any launches that involve any kind of ballistic missile technology.

Iran’s ballistic missile program is a cornerstone of its policy and it should be sanctioned by the UN each and every time it violates this UNSC resolution. As the ballistic missile program is directly related to the country’s nuclear program, it goes without saying that it should also be addressed in any nuclear deal. It clearly must also be restricted. Since the 2015 Iran nuclear deal was agreed upon, Iran has carried out over ten test-firings.

As one of the worst countries in terms of the number of executions per capita, Iran must be prevented from allowing this to happen. The human rights situation in Iran is very poor and many people are thrown in jail, tortured and executed without being given access to a lawyer and without being allowed due process.

It is also very worrying that Iran has been allowed to execute juvenile offenders. Human rights organisations have urged Iran to put an immediate halt to this, but it has continued regardless.

One must also understand the importance of the organized Iranian opposition which represents the people of Iran and is working towards a free and democratic Iran. It has never been silenced by the Iranian regime despite its best efforts. It has wide bipartisan support from current and former officials and it is the only viable alternative for the Iranian people.

The best way in which the Iranian regime can be countered is via the organised opposition and the people. They are, after all, the ones that have been suffering from the beginning.
