According to the report, 66% of executions in 2018 were not publically announced, which is the result of the Regime trying to hide the true statistics to avoid international scrutiny. This makes it hard to assess exactly how many have been executed, so the information was instead gathered through the families of the executed and at least one other independent source.

Over 90% of the unannounced executions took place in border regions, which are home to large ethnic minority populations. The charges against these people also tend to be politically motivated, with waging war against God being a common charge.

Some instances of this include Kurdish prisoners Zanyar Moradi, Loghman Moradi and Ramin Hossein Panahi, three Baluchi prisoners accused of working with ISIS, as well as three individuals who had been convicted of financial crimes, who were all executed.

These people were denied access to a lawyer, tortured into giving false confessions, and convicted despite, in some cases, not having the opportunity to commit the crimes.
Iran executed five children in 2017 and six in 2018, but it is the only country on earth that executes child criminals. (Saudi Arabia sentences children to death but does not carry out the sentences.) It also carries out public executions, which few countries still do, and the report says that there is not one prisoner that has been executed who has not also been tortured.

All of this is evidence that the international community must keep up the pressure on Iran over human rights, including through economic sanctions and other diplomatic pressure. Iran does not care what human rights groups say, but it does care about how much money it has and how much it can trade with the rest of the world. The US and EU should lead the way in making relations with Iran conditional on the end to executions in Iran and improvements in other areas of human rights.

However, another route would be to support the Iranian Resistance, who are opposed to the death penalty and in favour of human rights, who have the ability to overthrow the mullahs with the vocal support of the international community and the end to the appeasement policy on the Regime.
