A coalition of 150 human rights experts, legal scholars, and organizations have issued an urgent appeal to Dr. Mai Sato, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran. The letter, dated December 3, 2024, condemns Iran’s recent death sentences against six political prisoners and highlights a disturbing trend of state-sanctioned repression and rights violations.
A Grim Overview of the Situation
The individuals sentenced to death, who include professionals and long-time activists, were accused of charges such as “membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK)” and “conspiracy against national security.” Critics argue these charges are politically motivated and lack evidentiary support. Among those facing execution are:
- Abolhassan Montazer (65) – An architect with severe health conditions.
- Pouya Ghobadi (32) – An electrical engineer with a history of arrests.
- Vahid Bani-Amrian (32) – A management graduate detained multiple times since 2017.
- Babak Alipour (33) – A law graduate arrested earlier this year.
- Ali Akbar Daneshvarkar (57) – A civil engineer arrested in January 2024.
- Mohammad Taghavi (58) – A political prisoner previously tortured and imprisoned.
Additionally, Mohammad Taghavi’s brothers, Mojtaba and Ali, were sentenced to imprisonment and exile, solely due to familial connections.
Broader Repression and International Violations
The signatories emphasize that these actions are part of a systematic campaign to suppress dissent and intimidate Iranians advocating for democratic freedoms. The letter states that such measures violate international human rights law, particularly the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Iran is a party.
Earlier this year, the Revolutionary Courts handed down death sentences for other PMOI supporters, including local boxing champion Mohammad Javad Vafai Sani, and Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani, who were convicted under similarly controversial circumstances.
A Call for Immediate Action
The letter urges Dr. Sato to publicly condemn the death sentences and demand their immediate reversal. It also calls on the international community to address Iran’s “culture of impunity,” which emboldens ongoing rights abuses.
Who Stands Behind the Appeal?
The appeal has drawn signatories from diverse sectors, including former UN officials, Nobel laureates, human rights lawyers, and organizations like Justice for the Victims of the 1988 Massacre in Iran (JVMI). Notable signatories include:
- Geoffrey Robertson AO KC, former UN Special Court President.
- Sonja Biserko, member of the UN Commission of Inquiry on North Korea.
- Jody Williams, 1997 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
- Dr. Mark Ellis, Executive Director of the International Bar Association.
Organizations such as the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia and Families of the Missing (FOM) have also added their voices.
Urgency for Global Solidarity
This collective action underscores the urgent need for international attention and intervention. The letter not only highlights the specific cases of political prisoners in Iran but also serves as a broader indictment of the state’s repressive machinery.
As Iran faces growing scrutiny, this appeal reminds the global community of its responsibility to uphold human rights and prevent the silencing of dissenting voices.
