Iran: Death sentence for 3 Kurdish political prisoners becomes definite

The death sentence for Mohammad Abdollahi, a Kurdish political prisoner was finalized by country’s Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Mostafa Saleimei, another Kurdish political prisoner, went on a hunger strike in protest to the approval of his death sentence by clerical regime’s Supreme Court.

Mohammad Abdollahi, 35, from Mahabad Township (a Kurdish township western Iran) was arrested in his home on March 2010 and subsequently in the month of September was condemned to death by a court in Mahabad on charge of Moharebeh for his cooperation with an opposition Kurdish party. In recent days, this verdict has been approved and finalized by the country’s Supreme Court.

At the time of the arrest of Mr. Mohammad Abdollahi, the security agents opened fire wounding him in the leg. Injured as he was, he was transferred to Urumiyeh intelligence department and there he was locked up in solitary confinement without adequate medical treatment. He was badly tortured in prison such that his hand and leg were broken and due to lack of adequate medical treatment the bone in his leg was fused abnormally. Several teeth of this prisoner were also broken.

He is the brother of Mohammad-Amin Abdollahi, another political prisoner who has been condemned to death on charge of Moharebeh and membership in an opposition party. This verdict was issued while Mohammad-Amin Abdollahi was deprived of the right to choose his lawyer during trial.

Similarly, Mostafa Saleimei, the Kurdish political prisoner condemned to death, has gone on a hunger strike since April 7 in protest to the approval of his sentence by the Supreme Court. In the ninth day of his hunger strike, prison guards attacked and battered him and he was taken to solitary confinement.

The condition of this Kurdish political prisoner is deplorable and getting worse still. In the recent months he has been continuously facing physical problems and sickness which have made him feeble. Requests by this prisoner for medical care and his protest to the death sentence have met prison officials’ ignorance. He is currently suffering from severe infection of both kidneys, backache and visionary problems.

Mostafa Saleimei who has a child faces imminent execution now that his death sentence has been approved.
