The executive director of the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, said: “[Their case] represents an alarming continuation of a judicial system run by intelligence agencies with no respect for the law and no accountability.”
Since Hassan Rouhani took the Presidency in 2013, over 150 Baha’i have been arrested and nearly 400 acts of economic discrimination, including threats, intimidation and the closing of Baha’i-owned businesses.
Thousands of Baha’i followers have also been denied access to higher education or expelled from universities.
There are many other dual nationals currently imprisoned in Iran, including:
• British-Iranian businessman Kamal Foroughi
• British-Iranian charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe,
• Iranian-American businessman Siamak Namazi and his elderly father Baquer Namazi
• Iranian-American internet freedom activist Nizzar Zakka
• Iranian-American Reza Shahini
All of these people are held on trumped up charges and are believed to be hostages in order to extract money or favours from the countries in which the citizens live.
