In a shocking report, the Human Rights News Agency revealed that on November 18, interrogators of Amirabad Prison in Gorgan city, northern Iran, tortured a 19-year-old inmate to death. They brutally beat Mohammad Davaji in front of other prisoners to “teach them a lesson!”

“They took off his clothes and cuffed his hands and his feet while he was naked. The guards hung him upside down from the prison ceiling in the cold. They beat him until he was unconscious, and then poured cold water on him to punish him,” a prisoner narrated, and adding: “Unfortunately, Mohammad could not endure the torture and lost his life in the morning.”

Following the crime, the guards intensified security measures and imposed new restrictions. Furthermore, inmates who were to be released yesterday were not given permission to leave the prison, an eyewitness said.

Earlier, on November 10, another inmate Farhad Vosuqi was killed under torture in Khorramabad Central Prison. Farhad, 27, was married and father to a three-month-old boy.

He and his brother Mostafa were detained for murdering Hosseing Juzi, a crime that they had not committed. However, as a routine, the interrogators tortured him to admit the crime.

“Hossein Juzi was one of the organizers of the November 2019 protests in Nurabad district. The Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) secretly detained and killed him. Farhad and Mostafa were arrested to ‘cover the IRGC’s footprints.’ Mostafa is currently in prison,” a source familiar with the issue said.

Of course, Iranian authorities systematically torture prisoners as punishment or to extract “confessions” which are later used to incriminate them in court. On September 2, Amnesty International revealed that authorities tortured hundreds of detainees of the November protests to make televised confessions.

Meanwhile, the judiciary used forced confessions to sentence wrestling champion Navid Afkari to the death penalty. Finally, they secretly executed him despite he frequently explained that he had admitted to the crime under torture.

The mullahs executed Navid just because of his participation in anti-regime protests. Previously, they performed the same scenario against another detained protester Mostafa Salehi, father to two small children, in Isfahan province.

According to Article 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “Any act of torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment is an offense to human dignity and shall be condemned as a denial of the purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and as a violation of the human rights and fundamental freedoms proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

However, the Iranian regime does not respect human norms and it aimed to terrify society from further protests at all cost. In this respect, the international community must immediately act to save the lives of Iranian inmates, particularly political prisoners and prisoners of conscience.
