Iranian Youth Suffering from Depression and Drug Addiction

Widespread unemployment, lack of any prospects for a better future, increasing political and social pressures, and worsening economic conditions are causing depression among Iranian youth and driving them towards drug addiction.

A report circulated by the official Mehr News Agency quotes the Director of Mental Fitness for the Health Centre of Hamdan Province as saying, “The youth of the Iranian society are developing an increasing tendency towards consumption of mind-altering substances, particularly through water-pipe smoking [Sheesheh].”

This government functionary further added that “Because water-pipe smoking is easily available and provides immediate relief and relaxation, it attracts the youth more than any other narcotics. Instead of consulting a physician for proper treatment of their depression they are indulging in self-medication by using such substances.”
