Insider news & Analysis in Iran

The ministry of health, treatment and medical education released mortality rates from air pollution for major cities in Iran. Each year more than 4,400 people in Tehran, 3,200 people in Mashhad and 2,700 people in Isfahan die from air pollution. In these 3 cities alone 28 people die daily due to air pollution. Unannounced statistics in other cities indicate a true environmental disaster (Tabnak websites reports On February 24th).

With all eyes on the courageous protesters of Independence Square in Kiev, an interesting parallel with Iran simmers under the surface that you can bet is not lost on President Rouhani and Ayatollah Khamenei.

On February 25th, the state-run ISNA news agency quoted Mullah Pour-Mohammadi, the justice minister of Rouhani’s administration: “The incident in Ukraine, some highlight the news as if this incident is an internal issue and has happened in Iran. When somebody says something, it becomes first news title in the newspapers with colored photos and big logo such that they feel victorious. They turn the incident and political development that happened in Ukraine into an internal matter. Others report in a way as if they have lost something and mourn about it (i.e. Hassan Firouz-Abadi, chief of the regime’s armed forces general staff, who is a strong critic of the Ukrainian revolution).”

According to IRGC affiliated Fars news agency, Ahmad Khatami, member of the Iranian regime’s Assembly of Experts, said this on February 21st in the city of Kerman: “One day they insult our sanctities in newspapers (i.e. Bahar Newspaper) and one day, like three days ago, they insult the definitive verdict of retribution and calling it inhumane (i.e. Aseman Newspaper). This newspaper has been banned by the court but it is not enough. Like Khomeini did, those who insult our sanctities must be declared apostate and summoned to the court.”

The Aseman newspaper received its permit to distribute in Iran on February 3rd, 2014 and published its first edition on February 15th. The newspaper was banned just 7 days after initial publication due to posting an article about castigation in its fourth issue. The newspaper’s director was also arrested.

In a factional schism, mullahs’ regime Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh disclosed on his Facebook the guilt of many regime leaders of fraud and embezzlement. He writes: “In oil contracts, embezzlements of over 400 billion tomans (300 million dollars at official rates) have taken place. In many of these contracts neither the amount is finalized, nor the timeline for the project, nor is there any acceptable guarantee for the quality of the work by the contractor. Although plunders by Babak Zanjani is colossal, but we do have other cases that are all above 300 million dollars.”
