INU - On Tuesday, Iran Human Rights Monitor reported that protests on Sunday at the Ahwaz Steel National Industrial Group involved the participation of approximately 500 workers. That day marked the fourth consecutive day of protests at the site, where workers are reportedly owed months of back pay. Lengthy periods of non-payment are a common problem among Iranian businesses, many of which are owned in whole or in part by the state or by state-linked affiliates and groups like the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

INU - On Tuesday, the Associated Press published a report describing the harsh criticisms that had recently been expressed by Iranian students who were invited to visit with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during the holy month of Ramadan. Such meetings occur annually, during an event that provides a number of student leaders with an opportunity to deliver speeches in the presence of the leading clerical authority. This year’s event took place on Monday and reportedly featured at least one speech that assumed an unusually frank tone in discussing the economic difficulties facing the Islamic Republic in the midst of a crisis that recently saw the national currency fall to roughly half its previous value.
