These protests, part of a larger anti-regime uprising, was driven by a severe lack of safe drinking water as half the country is now left without sufficient water supply thanks to a years-long drought exacerbated by extreme Regime corruption. Just last week, 230 Iranians were poisoned in Khuzestan after they drank polluted water because they couldn’t find safe drinking water.

The Khorramshahr protests, which have now spread to other cities in the region, came after the shopkeepers in Tehran’s ‘Grand Bazaar’ went on strike in protest against the failing economy and 129 people were detained.

These protests may spell the end for the Iranian Regime, with Claude Salhani of The Arab Weekly noting that the commercial centre in Tehran is almost always an indication of nationwide feelings.

The protests are being driven by a failing economy, increased environmental problems, and the Regime’s handling of these. Simply, the people see the Regime as the common problem and seek regime change.

This general feeling was echoed at the Free Iran gathering by Maryam Rajavi, the President of the National Council of Resistance in Iran (NCRI), who declared that regime change was not only possible, it was inevitable.

She said: “This is the Iranian nation’s fight. The regime’s overthrow is inevitable. Victory is certain and Iran will be free. The prospects of an Iran devoid of the mullahs and the Shah are looming. The so-called solution within religious fascism has become null and void.”

She vowed that Iran would soon come under the rule of the people and work for all citizens, with a focus of separation between religion and state, peaceful coexistence, and international cooperation.

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has dismissed the protesters, who are literally calling for his death, by claiming that they are being influenced by foreign actors. However, it is clear that even he sees that the regime is in danger, when he warned officials against taking their positions for granted.

The US is currently increasing its sanctions against Iran, following its withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, which former New York City mayor Rudy Guliani said was part of Trump’s plan to suffocate the mullah’s Regime in order to achieve regime change.

Meanwhile, the protesters in Khuzestan have reportedly taken up arms to defend themselves against the suppressive security forces.
