After Foulad, a soccer team from Khuzestan Province (southwestern Iran), became champion of Iran’s Premier Soccer League on April 11, the youth of Ahvaz, capital of this province, took to the streets chanting anti-regime slogans. Most of the slogans, in Persian and Arabic, were against the regime and Hassan Rouhani, its President.
Despite the fact that regime’s suppressive forces were on full alert to thwart any youth uprisings which might turn political, they failed and anti-regime slogans were chanted by the youth. By experience, as has been the case in soccer matches in Tehran, when there is chance for the youth to take to the streets regime’s security forces are on full alert; nevertheless, they failed to control the crowd.
Video footages of this demonstration have been placed on the YouTube, Facebook and Twitter public networks where the youth of Ahvaz are seen chanting “The nation wants to topple the system”.
