Rally of Tehran Stock Market Shareholders

Tehran province—shareholders of the Tehran Stock Market held a rally in front of the Securities and Exchange Organization. They protested the sharp drop in stock value, leading to the loss of their investments and savings.

Last week, on January 18, stockholders held a rally in front of the Tehran Stock Market building, demanding officials return their plundered investments. “Death to [President Hassan] Rouhani,” “Death to the economic criminal,” and “You have stolen our money and are boasting with it,” chanted protesters. They also pulled down the Bourse’s flag and trampled on it.

In 2019, the regime’s top officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Rouhani, invited the people to invest in the Bourse. “The people should invest in the Bourse,” Khamenei said on November 18, 2019. Later, on August 12, 2020, Rouhani had warned citizens about losing their properties in wrong investments.

“The people must realize that the gold coin and dollar market is not a safe place for investment. But the bourse is a safe place for investment. Purchasing oil is a place for investment. We would like to aid and lead the people through a reliable path, not a path while they win advantages today, but tomorrow face disadvantages,” the state-run Tabnak website quoted Rouhani as saying.

Today, none of the officials admit to their responsibility, and they have abandoned the people and their dilemmas in the toughest economic situation. However, Iran’s society precisely remembers officials’ hollow claims and addresses them in their slogans.
