On Thursday, December 8, 2022, the Judiciary’s Mizan news agency announced that the imprisoned protester Mohsen Shekari, 23, was hanged. “Mohsen Shekari, a rioter who blocked Sattar Khan street on December 23, 2022, in Tehran and wounded one of the security guards with a machete, was executed this morning,” Mizan wrote.

“This crime shows the regime’s fear in the face of the uprising; youths will not leave it unanswered,” said Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran. “International call to adopt effective measures against the regime to stop executions, regime embassies must be closed, diplomats, Revolutionary Guards, and Intelligence Ministry agents expelled.”

“Horrifying execution of young protester exposes authorities’ cruelty and risk of further bloodshed,” Amnesty International stated. “The clear aim of Iranian authorities is to instill fear among the public in a desperate attempt to cling to power and end the popular uprising.”

“In an attempt to intimidate those fighting for their rights, the Iranian regime executed Mohsen Shekari, a 23-year-old protesting the killing of Mahsa Amini,” said Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly. “The Iranian regime can’t stifle the free will of the people.”

“Violating every human right, even that of a fair trial, Iranian authorities have executed a 23-year-old protester. “Strongly condemn the horrible news from Iran this morning about the first execution of a protester following the Mahsa Amini protests,” said Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra. “The Netherlands is firmly opposed to the death penalty under all circumstances and calls upon Iran to immediately cease all executions.”

The regime in Iran has been cracking down on peaceful protestors for weeks—today’s execution of Mohsen Shekari marks a new phase of state violence,” said German Commissioner for Human Rights Luise Amtsberg. “This is only a snapshot of what the regime is willing and able to do. But Iranians will not stop fighting for their rights in the streets.”

“Norway condemns that the Iranian authorities have executed one of those arrested during the demonstrations. We call on Iran to end the use of the death penalty and to end the suppression of fundamental rights,” said Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt. “Norway is against all use of the death penalty.”

“UN Special Procedures condemn today’s execution of a 23-year-old demonstrator convicted in the context of nationwide protests in Iran,” state the UN Bureau in Geneva. “Executions following unfair trials constitute an arbitrary deprivation of life,” warn the experts.

“The Iranian regime’s inhumanity knows no bounds. Moshen Shekari was sentenced and executed in a perfidious summary procedure because he disagreed with the regime,” said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. “But the threat of execution will not suffocate people’s desire for freedom.”

“Outraged by the tragic news of the first execution of a protestor in Iran. The world cannot turn a blind eye to the abhorrent violence committed by the Iranian regime against its own people,” said UK Foreign Minister James Cleverly. “The UK is opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances.”

“Mohsen Shekari, one of the boys arrested during the protests in Iran, was hanged this morning. The EU is against the death penalty in all circumstances.”

“France utterly condemns today’s execution of an Iranian man who was sentenced to death following his participation in ongoing protests in Iran,” stated the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

“We strongly condemn today’s execution of Mohsen Shekari, which we deem disproportional and inhumane,” stated the Austrian Foreign Ministry. “Austria reiterates its unequivocal opposition to the death penalty, and we urge the Iranian government to stop all further executions related to the ongoing protests.”

December 8 marked the 84th day of anti-regime protests in Iran. The demonstrations began following the heinous murder of Mahsa Amini, 22, in police custody. However, it immediately turned into a revolution against the entire theocratic regime.

According to the Iranian opposition Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK/PMOI), the protests have extended to 280 cities. The regime has killed over 700 citizens, injured tens of thousands, and detained more than 30,000. The MEK has published the names of 565 killed protesters.
