As the social and economic crises in Iran are continuing to intensify and society is becoming more and more restive, this past weekend Iran’s state media has continued to publish warnings about the heightened responses to the worsening crises.
The Covid-19 pandemic is still ravaging Iran, with thousands of people dying daily due to the novel coronavirus. New infection waves are hitting the country one after the other, and with the Iranian regime delaying the vaccination program, and using less-effective vaccines, this has increased the infection and mortality rates.
The state-run Arman-e Meli newspaper wrote on October 30 that according to state figures, 47% of Iran’s population has received two vaccine doses, and 75% have received one. However, citizen reports from across the country have indicated the ineffectiveness of the vaccines being used, especially due to the latest virus mutations and the increasing number of patients being infected.
Many health experts now warn that with the coming winter and the spread of flu and influenza, the number of Covid-19 infections in Iran could increase, leading to more deaths.
Regarding the economic crisis in Iran, the country is still being affected heavily by the regime’s corruption and cases of embezzlement. The regime continues to fund its terrorist proxy groups across the Middle East, while Iranian citizens are desperately struggling to make ends meet and provide for their families as they fall below the poverty line.
The Mardom Salarie daily wrote, “According to Iran’s statistic center, the inflation rate of the whole country in October was 45.4% while this rate fluctuates. Rice, sugar, and meat prices in September have increased between 28.4 to 71.6 percent. Sugar had the largest price increase.”
It is worth noting that Iranian workers’ and employees’ salaries are around 4 million tomans. Yet, the regime authorities delay paying salaries.
Arman-e Meli warned that the rising levels of poverty in Iran are adding to the restiveness in society, saying that officials need to resolve these issues alongside economic experts soon rather than later.
On October 30, the Mostaghel daily wrote, “The political system in Iran has been facing the crises of political legitimacy, economic efficiency, and structural corruption for many years.”
They warned that if no reformations are made to the structures and strategies in the system that it could lead to the collapse of the entire government. Discussing the country post-revolution, they stated that the state ‘has no economic and political freedom or independence’ and that nothing remains ‘of the republic and the Islamic wings of the system’.
The Hamdeli daily referred to the increasing inflation rate in Iran in their Saturday publication, saying that the current rate of 58% is the highest level in Iran since the 1940s. As a result of the worsening crisis, they warned of the ‘widespread social anger’ which would ‘result in bitter social unrests’.
On October 31, the Aftab-e Yazd media outlet warned, “When people are unable to meet their basic needs, they join the impoverished social classes. When the impoverished classes grow too large, millions will have nothing to lose and resort to violence. This would certainly endanger the system’s security.”
