Camp Ashraf in Iraq was once home to more than 3,000 exiled Iranian members of the Mujahideen-e Khalq (MEK), opposed to Iran's clerical regime. The population had fallen over recent years to about 100. They now number around 50, following a massacre by the Iraqi Army. According to reports, many of the unarmed dead appear to have been summarily executed. Another report says seven of their number have been taken hostage.

In response to the early morning attacks by Iraqi military forces on unarmed residents of Camp Ashraf, former United States Senate Robert  Torricelli (D-NJ) release the following statement:

Ed Rendell in a statement condemns attack to Camp Ashraf and saidl: "This is a dark day for the honor of the United States of America. Since 2003, when we pledged 4300 members of the MEK protection, we have seen five murderous attacks - three at Ashraf and two at Camp Liberty, with a death toll of more than 100 innocent victims. We should be ashamed."
