Auvers-sur-Oise , France – At a somber memorial ceremony held today at the headquarters of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) honoring the victims of recent Iraqi rocket attacks on Camp Liberty, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, called for an independent inquiry by the United Nations and the continued massacre of Iranian refugees in Iraq.
On December 26th, Camp Liberty, a former U.S. Army base and now refugee camp housing more than 3000 members Iranian resistance group, the People’s Mojahedeen Organization of Iran (PMOI) is located in a protected area near Baghdad Airport was targeted by dozens of missiles and rockets killing four defenseless residents and injuring another 70. Residents of Camp Liberty are classified as ‘protected persons’ by the Geneva conventions.
“We know that this most recent attack was conducted at the behest of the Iranian regime with the cooperation of Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki,” said Rajavi. “These actions, the murder of 52 refugees at Camp Ashraf on September 1st 2013 and the taking of 7 hostages must be investigated immediately,” added Rajavi.
Rajavi called on the international community, in particular the U.S., EU, UN and the UN Security Council to adopt urgent measures to save the lives of these defenseless asylum-seekers.
Among such measures she called for the immediate release of the seven Ashraf hostages, conducting a comprehensive, independent, transparent and impartial probe into the September 1 atrocity in Ashraf and the December 26 attack on Liberty by United Nations, as well as the immediate release of the seven Ashraf hostages. She also demanded the transfer of asylum-seekers in Camp Liberty, especially the injured and the ailing, to European countries or United States.
The December 26, 2013 missile attacks on Camp Liberty were the fourth attack in 2013. The al-Mukhtar Army, an Iraqi Shiite militia group sponsored by Iran and linked to its Revolutionary Guard, publicly claimed responsibility for the attack. Dozens 107 mm rockets and 280 mm rockets were launched against the camp.
These facts support PMOI claims that the attack on Camp Liberty was directed against them from Tehran, with the complicity of the Iraqi government.
French personalities, including elected officials from Val d’Oise Province such as Jean-Pierre Béquet, mayor of Auvers-sur-Oise and member of provincial council, and dignitaries such as honorary governor and former head of DST Yves Bonnet, former UN Chief of Human Rights Office in Iraq Tahar Boumedra, and religious personalities such as Bishop Gaillot; Sheik Khalil Merroun, head of d’Evry Mosque; Abdelrahmane Dahmane, President of Council of Muslim Democrats of France participated in the memorial and jointly called on France to launch an initiative at the Security Council for protection of Camp Liberty residents and launching an inquiry into the Ashraf massacre.
France, the US, Canada, most European nations, the UN, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees were among the governments and international organizations that condemned the attack.
“The situation at Camp Liberty is very dangerous and there is still the threat of another attack at any moment, “ said Rajavi. “We look to the international community to engage immediately, provide protections for the residents of Camp Liberty, provide asylum to its residents and to once and for all put an end to the terrible tragedies occurring in Iraq,” Rajavi added.
