Recognizing Iran regime’s real opponents

By INU Staff

The Iran threat is complicated and it is worsened by the misinformation and a lack of true reporting by the international press. There are three points that can determine what side of the argument one is on.

Point 1: International sanctions

In order to survive, the Iranian regime needs to continue funding its proxy groups and militias across the region so that it can continue spreading chaos and suppressing its opposition. International sanctions are a major impediment to the regime and it cannot get around the oil sanctions enough to bring in the revenue that it requires.

The main opposition to the Iranian regime, the PMOI / MEK and the NCRI, welcome the tough economic sanctions and have called on all governments and the UN Security Council to increase economic pressure on the regime.

The Iranian regime had access to billions of dollars when previous sanctions were lifted. It could have made a huge difference to the lives of the Iranian people but it was plundered on terrorist activities. And to make the corrupt regime officials even richer, while the people got poorer and poorer.

The economic sanctions are wholly justified when we consider that any funds the regime has access to through trade will be plundered on belligerent or corrupt practices.

Anyone who does not support the U.S. sanctions are playing right into the regime’s hands. The regime must be cut off from the funds that it uses to support terrorist groups and to spread chaos, as the opposition and the people of Iran know.

Point 2: IRGC designation

The IRGC is the regime’s backbone, without which survival would not be possible. It is the main force behind the brutal oppression of the Iranian people and it is in charge of the regime’s bloody exploits outside its borders. It is also the major power behind the country’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Those wanting to make the world a safer place will support the IRGC designation.

Point 3: The MEK

The main opposition to the Iranian regime, and the only viable alternative, is the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK). It has extensive support both inside Iran and abroad and the Iranian regime considers it to be the main enemy because of this. The MEK is striving for a democratic Iran that is free and where the people can enjoy human rights.

It has Resistance Units the whole way across the country and they work together to organize the major protests in which the people make their desire for regime change heard.

The Iranian regime has executed more than 100,000 members of the MEK in its four decade rule and anyone who dares to speak in support of the MEK in Iran risks arrest, imprisonment, torture and even execution.

The regime has spread much misinformation about the MEK and those that fall into the trap of believing the lies without looking up the facts are fuelling the misinformation.

How can the Iran threat be mitigated?

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the leader of the opposition, calls on democratic governments to ignore the regime’s lobbies and listen to the long-suffering people of Iran. She suggests 6 ways in which the international community can curb the Iran threat.

  1. Recognize that the people of Iran want freedom and not the clerical and despotic rule of the mullahs.
  2. Designate all of the agencies and departments that export terrorism and fundamentalism as terrorist organizations, in particular the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).
  3. Ensure that MOIS and IRGC Quds Force agents are not allowed to reside in the U.S. or Europe.
  4. Ensure that the United Nations Security Council and the International Court of Justice take the dossier of the Iranian regime’s human rights violations and massacre of political prisoners into account.
  5. Ban the illegitimate regime from the UN and recognize the Iranian Resistance as the voice of the people of Iran.
  6. Remove the regime and its proxies from Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria.
