Maryam Rajavi’s Speech to the Italian Parliament on Iran Protests

Maryam Rajavi: "The actual number of martyrs of the uprising is far greater than 1,000 persons. So far, the names of more than 400 of them have been announced by the Iranian Resistance."

On Tuesday, December 10, the Italian Parliament held a conference in support of the Iranian people’s nationwide uprising, which was attended by a large number of Italian MPs, freedom-loving personalities and supporters of the Iranian Resistance.

Maryam Rajavi, the leader of the Iranian opposition, delivered a message to the conference about the protests for regime change that began on November 15 and quickly spread to 190 cities across Iran. She began by expressing her gratitude for their support of the Iranian people and explained how horrific the mullahs’ crimes truly are and why the Iranian people are fighting against them.

Maryam Rajavi said: “In circumstances in which the mullahs have extensively violated the Iranian people’s right to life when they have executed 120,000 of their political opponents. In circumstances where the mullahs’ theocracy has denied the people of Iran the right to participate in political decision-making about their own, their society and their country’s fate, and when free elections is a myth. In such circumstances, our people have resorted to the same option mentioned in the preamble to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, namely, they have taken recourse “as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression.”

She explained that these protests have terrified the regime, which is why the mullahs have responded to peaceful protests with the massacre of over 1,000 protesters, including many under the age of 18.

Maryam Rajavi said: “The actual number of martyrs of the uprising is far greater than 1,000 persons. So far, the names of more than 400 of them have been announced by the Iranian Resistance. The regime is [either] refusing to hand over the victims’ bodies to their families or bans them from holding funeral ceremonies for the martyrs. The horrendous mass killing of November 2019 is one of the most horrific crimes of the 21st century.”
She then criticized European governments for an “inadequate” response to the massacre, as well as the arrest of at least 12,000 persons, saying that their silence and inaction is a “green light” to the regime to continue its crimes.
Maryam Rajavi asserted that the European Union must end its appeasement of the regime, as well as demand an immediate halt to the killings and arrests. She said if the Regime fails to comply, then the EU must be ready to call for UN Security Council sanctions.

Maryam Rajavi also called for the UN to send fact-finding missions to Iran to investigate the murders, injuries, and imprisonment of the protesters, as well as declare the regime leaders to be committing crimes against humanity and bring them to justice.

Maryam Rajavi said: “I urge both houses of Italy’s parliament, the Italian government, the European Union and all world governments to recognize the Iranian people’s Resistance and uprising for the overthrow of the regime. A free and democratic Iran is not only the urgent desire of the people of Iran but is essential for peace and security in the Middle East and the world.”
