Speech of, the United Nations Independent Expert on the Promotion of a Democratic and Equitable International Order Alfred Morris Zayas:
Thank you very much. Madam Rajavi, ladies and gentlemen,
On the 9th of December 2013, six members of the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council issued a press release urging Iraq to establish the whereabouts of then seven missing residents of Camp Ashraf and condemning the gross violations of human rights endured by the residents of Ashraf and Liberty. More than three months have elapsed without any action and I myself an expert have not received any response to this press release. My colleague, the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial summary and arbitrary executions Christof Hines, noted “international law clearly requires governments to ensure that all allegations of killings are investigated in a prompt, effective and impartial manner irrespective of who the perpetrator is. Failure to do so is a violation of the international covenant on civil and political rights.” In the same press release, I myself noted that the residents of Camp Ashraf and Liberty have been subjected to physical assault on repeated occasions. I condemned the lack of proper investigation of the massacres and the impunity of those responsible for them.
I added “grave crimes of this nature and the impunity that has accompanied them entail violations of numerous international treaty provisions and constitute an assault on the rule of law and are affront international community and a threat to the international order.” I concluded as I conclude today that the families of the killed and disappeared are entitled to the right to know what happened to their loved ones and to reparation for the suffering endured and I hereby once again call upon all of my colleagues of the Special Procedures; I call formally on the Human Rights Council and I call on High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay to make a strong statement and to demand investigation of all these gross violations of human rights that continue to this date. Madam Rajavi you have our solidarity. I thank you.
