Diverse Expressions of Support for Iranian Resistance

At the former, politicians from Arizona and from the United States in general came together to discuss the topic of “Countering Islamic Fundamentalism.” In attendance was former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Hugh Shelton, who said, “Tehran is essentially the modern prototype of fundamentalist Islam” and is responsible for the first clash between the US and political Islam at the time of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis.

Shelton went on to express support for the NCRI as a moderate, secular, democratic alternative to the regime in power, a sentiment that was echoed by various other attendees including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former White House public relations director Linda Chavez who declared on behalf of the US, “It is a movement that deserves our support.”

On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, Jose Maria Chiquillo, a Spanish senator and foreign affairs spokesperson for the Spanish People’s Party expressed his own support for this democratic alternative, at a similar conference.

“Many of my colleagues in Congress and the Senate have a great sympathy for this movement,” he said, “because it has the strength of the speech, of reason, and asks for justice and freedom for their people and want to break the chains that submit the citizens of Iran under a government that oppresses them and takes away from them the most cherished things: freedom and in many cases even life.”

Chiquillo also specifically criticized the current policies of some Western nations toward Iran. The senator counseled against partnership with Iran in the conflict against ISIL, thus expressing a view similar to that of the NCRI, which insists that the first essential step in resolving the current Middle East crisis is to evict Iran from the other areas of the region into which it has injected itself.
