Firm Policy against Iran regime is the Necessary Approach for Peace in the Region

Although the statement has been called ambiguous, time will tell if the it will be a success. Many believe that a firm policy contributed to this outcome.

According to an editorial published by the National Council of Resistance of Iran, “when dealing with rogue regimes that suppress their own people, firmness is the only appropriate approach. History tells us that the policy of appeasement, under any pretext, is a recipe for war and more instability.”

Advocates of the policy of appeasement claimed that adopting a firm policy would mean war. But appeasement denied the Iranian people the right to change their regime, which was portrayed as causing chaos and uncertainty.

The NCRI writes, “While they get top marks for deception, proponents of this notion should note their time is over. Their ‘echo chamber’ has lost its power.”

The differences between Iran and North Korea highlight the necessity of a firm policy and confrontation of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, its meddling in other countries, and its support for international terrorism.

Iranian society is troubled. Daily protests occur nationwide, and the people are calling for change. The turn of the year uprising in more than 140 cities across Iran saw people demanding regime change.

Following the uprising, major protests broke out in Ahvaz and other cities of the oil-rich Khuzestan Province, which lasted for more than a week. Protests in Isfahan by farmers lasted for days. Friday prayer sermons, the regime’s official platform, were turned into an anti-regime protests.

For nearly a week in May, the city of Kazerun was rocked by protests. Additional security forces were sent to the city, and at least four people were killed. Only after a number of concessions were agreed upon, did the tensions settle.

Additionally, a nationwide strike by truckers has shaken the foundations of the regime for the last two weeks.

Iran’s principal opposition group, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), has played a key role in mobilizing many of these protests.

Iran has a viable alternative to the current regime, which is capable of governing the country in the transitional period after the regime’s overthrow. The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) represents democratic aspirations of the Iranian people, and is inclusive of different political tendencies and representatives from various religious and ethnic minorities.

Standing shoulder to shoulder with the Iranian people in their efforts toward regime change will prevent war, and will result in peace for the region. All governments must abandon the policy of appeasement, and allow the Iranian people and their organized resistance to accomplish regime change.
