Iranian opposition hunger strike enters 8th week

NCRI – The hunger strike by hundreds of Iranian opposition members in Camp Liberty, Iraq, that has began on September 1 after the massacre and mass execution at Camp Ashraf and kidnapping 7 residents by Iraqi forces, enters its eight week.

Simultaneously, Iranians in Geneva, London, Berlin, Ottawa, and Melbourne continue their hunger strike.

Iraqi forces under the command of Nouri al-Maliki attacked Camp Ashraf and killed 52 members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). Seven residents of the camp including six women were taken hostage by Iraqi forces.

Release of the 7 Camp Ashraf hostages is at the top of demands by hunger strikers, many of whom are family members or close relatives of the victims of the September 1 massacre or the hostages.

The hostages are held by Maliki’s Special Forces in the “Dirty Army” in Baghdad airport, Sharaf prison, and other secret locations in the Green Zone linked to Maliki, and are at the risk of being extradited to the religious fascism ruling Iran.

Hunger strikers at Liberty are facing various deleterious conditions such as severe reduction of eyesight and hearing, digestive abnormalities, insomnia, and other conditions, and many of them are placed under medical surveillance.

Simultaneous with the hunger strike in Camp Liberty similar protests are held in Berlin, Geneva, Ottawa and Melbourne by supporters of the Iranian opposition. Protesters also demand an independent investigation into the massacre at Camp Ashraf.
