Maryam Rajavi Calls for Justice for 1988 Massacre Victims: Part 1

Over the past 32 years, the Iranian Resistance has divulged numerous documents, names of the 1988 massacre victims and their unmarked graves.

In a speech to the Free Iran Global Summit in July, the Iranian opposition leader Maryam Rajavi called yet again for justice for the victims of the 1988 massacre of political prisoners. Here, we will examine that speech.

The massacre, ordered by regime founder Ruhollah Khomeini, was a direct response to the Iranian Resistance forcing the regime to accept a ceasefire in the Iran-Iraq War, some six years after Iraq had sued for peace. The Iranian Resistance intervened, desperate to save lives after one million Iranian deaths, knowing that Khomeini would continue until the bitter end, even sending children off to walk the minefields.

In the 1988 fatwa, Khomeini intended to “annihilate” the Resistance to “guarantee his rule,” Maryam Rajavi said, but this brutality earned him the ire of the Iranian people and even his second-in-command who spoke out against him and was subsequently put under house arrest.

Maryam Rajavi cited Baroness Boothroyd as saying that the 1988 massacre was “the greatest crime against humanity since World War II” and noted that for 32 years, it was remained unpunished, which is why Maryam Rajavi and her supporters will always call for the masterminds and perpetrators to be prosecuted.

Maryam Rajavi explained that her husband and fellow Resistance Leader Massoud wanted the mullahs responsible tried for crimes against humanity before an international tribunal and the Iranian people.

“Over the past 32 years, the Iranian Resistance has held hundreds and thousands of conferences, rallies, marches, and symbolic trials in this regard and divulged numerous documents, names of the victims and their unmarked graves,” she said.

Maryam Rajavi further explained that the Call-for-Justice movement was a major reason that current Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei failed to get Ebrahim Raisi installed as President in 2017 when they revealed Raisi’s key role in the 1988 massacre as a member of the Death Committee.

“The campaign was so effective that [President Hassan] Rouhani used it to attract more votes for himself. Opportunistically, he said Raisi did not have anything on his record except 38 years of executions and imprisonments,” she added.

Flanked by Qassem Soleimani and Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) commanders, Khamenei warned Rouhani, just two days later, about crossing the regime’s red lines and “recommended” that the Intelligence Ministry prevent Raisi’s exposure as a mass murderer.

Maryam Rajavi said: “In the next steps when the international Call-for-Justice movement climaxed, the regime undertook its own special schemes which it called “a complex multi-faceted operation.” It recruited a mercenary to distort the objectives of the Call-for-Justice movement, and marginalize the [People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK)] and their leadership, despite the fact that the PMOI/MEK’s destruction was the main goal of the 1988 massacre and Khomeini’s fatwa.”

Of course, Maryam Rajavi explains, the regime will use any method to get rid of the Resistance, even attempting to bomb the Iranian Resistance’s annual gathering in France in 2018, for which an Iranian diplomat Assadollah Assadi is on trial in Europe, and attempting to attack an Iranian New Year gathering by the Resistance in Albania.
