Maryam Rajavi: Europe Must Stand with Iranian People

"Human rights for the people of Iran, comprehensive embargo of the religious dictatorship, and recognition of the Iranian people’s Resistance for freedom and democracy," Maryam Rajavi said.

On Wednesday, Iranian opposition leader Maryam Rajavi spoke at an online event for Members of the European Parliament about the need to condemn the Iranian regime for their crimes against humanity, hold them accountable in court, and stand with the Iranian people in their struggle for a free, democratic, and non-nuclear Iran.

Maryam Rajavi, who has long had the support of the majority of MEPs over her ten-point plan for a free Iran, began her speech by advising that there are dozens of political prisoners on death row in Iran and dozens more being tortured to death. She said that the families of these protesters, especially those killed by the regime during the November 2019 uprising are calling on Europe and the world to stand with them and demand justice.

She said: “This regime is facing the anger and discontent of the vast majority of the Iranian people. In addition to thousands of large and small protests, five major uprisings have erupted in Iran since January 2018. The Resistance Units and courageous youth, through their activities, have had a great impact on shattering the atmosphere of fear and terror. They are paving the way for further protests and uprisings.”

Maryam Rajavi then spoke about how some people are surprised by the regime’s actions, like executing protester and wrestling champion Navid Afkari despite an international campaign to save his life or continuing to seek nuclear weapons even though that is one of the major reasons for increasing and extending sanctions against them. She advised that looking for this to make sense to democratic countries is like expecting moderation from the regime. It just won’t happen.

After all, the regime tried to bomb a Resistance rally in Paris in 2018. She said that this shows just how desperate the regime is in the face of popular protests and how confident the mullahs were about not facing consequences for such an attack in the heart of Europe.

Maryam Rajavi said: “The developments of the past year have shown that the people of Iran are ready to overthrow the clerical regime and establish a pluralist republic based on the separation of religion and state and gender equality, the abolition of the death penalty respect for the rights of ethnic groups, and a non-nuclear Iran.”

She advised that Europe’s security, long-term economic interests, and Middle East relations would be better served by standing by the Iranian people, not the regime.

Maryam Rajavi said: “On behalf of the Iranian people’s Resistance, I propose a policy with three elements: Human rights for the people of Iran, comprehensive embargo of the religious dictatorship, and recognition of the Iranian people’s Resistance for freedom and democracy.”

She urged the European Parliament to get the Council of Ministers to adopt binding laws that expel Iranian agents from Europe, shut down the embassies, and designate the IRGC and its proxies as terrorist groups. She further called for an independent investigation into the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners, the 2019 slaughter of 1,500 protesters, and the condition of prisons and prisoners.
