MEK rally in London for International Women’s Day

The MEK supporters, mostly members of the Anglo-Iranian Communities, called for the UK to recognize the right of the Iranian people to overthrow the theocratic dictatorship in order to secure a free Iran.

The speakers at the event highlighted how women in Iran are repressed in all aspects of life because the mullahs misogynistic laws have relegated women to the status of second-class citizens and advocated that there is a democratic alternative to the Iranian Regime, which is the MEK led by Maryam Rajavi.

Indeed, not only do the MEK believe in gender equality and equal representation in government, they already practice it, with at least half of leading MEK positions filled by women.

Dr Jocelynne Scutt, a former judge, said: “We stand here today on International Women’s Day to honour Iran’s strong, committed, courageous women. To the brave women of Iran, who have to endure Revolutionary Guards’ harassment, we support you and stand beside you in the struggle for human rights, equality and justice. We salute you, we are with you.”
Other speakers said that the MEK’s focus on gender equality and the ongoing courage of Iranian women as one of the greatest assets the Resistance had.

Theresa Villiers, Conservative MP for Chipping Barnet, said: “I support the cause of human rights and democracy in Iran. The appalling situation of women in Iran is why we need reforms and change. So I am here to support your just demands for justice, democracy, and freedom.”

Roger Lyons, former President of TUC, said: “I am here to fully support the democratic aspirations of the Iranian people, especially women, led by [the MEK] and its president-elect Maryam Rajavi.”

Nearly 1000 women were arrested in Iran in 2018 for participating in anti-regime protests, mostly protests against the mandatory hijab, according to a December 2018 report by the Women’s Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). The NCRI is a coalition of democratic anti-regime groups and the MEK is its biggest member.

1988 Massacre
The speakers also brought up the recent appointment of Ebrahim Raisi as the head of the Iranian Judiciary, which is ironic considering his participation in the Death Committees that sent 30,000 political prisoners, mainly MEK members, to their deaths in 1988, including those as young as 15 and those who were pregnant.

The MEK protesters echoed an Early Day Motion from September 2016 supported by 80 cross-party British MPs that called for the prosecution of the massacre perpetrators.

Malcolm Fowler, a former member of the Human Rights Committee of the Law Society of England and Wales, said: “I join you in condemning the appointment of Raisi and urging the UK Government to take the lead and to work with allies at the UN to ask relevant UN bodies to order an investigation and bring the regime’s officials like Raisi to justice for crimes against humanity .”

Terrorist designation of IRGC and MOIS
Other MEK supporters urged the British government to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) as terrorist organizations because of the roles in repressing the Iranian people and potting terror attacks against Iranian dissidents and MEK members in Europe and the US.
