Who are the MEK? Part 10

The thing is that the Regime has a viable alternative in the form of the oldest, largest, and most popular resistance organization in Iran, which has fought two separate regimes since it was founded in 1965. That is the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

In order to help you earn more about the MEK, we have created an in-depth series. In this part, we will learn about how the Regime tries to discredit the MEK through exhibitions, books, and websites specifically designed to attack the MEK.

Anti-MEK Exhibitions

Following the 2009 uprising, the Regime increased the number of exhibitions that it had attacking the MEK. These propaganda exhibitions were mainly staged at high schools and universities to scare young people off joining the MEK.

Between April 2010 and December 2012, the Regime staged more than 120 anti-MEK exhibitions in 36 cities across Iran. Two prominent examples were the “Basirat Exhibition” at Mashhad University in June 2011, where the Regime called the MEK “terrorists” with a “long history of violence and terror”, and the 17th annual festival of Press and News Agencies in November 2010, where the Regime called the MEK “the green hypocrisy”.

Though these anti-MEK exhibitions largely tapered off after 2013, the Regime will still sponsor the occasionally, whenever they feel like the MEK may be getting more support.

Show Trials

The Iranian Regime also tried to undercut the MEK’s popularity by staging “show trials” at universities in order to reveal the “true colours” of the MEK as “enemies of the Islamic Republic”. The first trial was held at Alama University in October 2013.

Books, Anti-MEK Organizations, and Attack Websites

The Iranian Regime will go to any lengths to smear the MEK and has published hundreds of books containing lies about the MEK, which are handed out at exhibitions, sent to foreign government officials, and given to reporters in the hope that the anti-MEK sentiment will catch on. Some of these books are even written under the names of former MEK supporters who were coerced by the Regime. Some books are even forged and given fake ISBN numbers.

The Regime has also created many organizations with the sole purpose of producing anti-MEK propaganda, including:

  • Habilian Association
  • Nejat Association (has one branch in each province)
  • Edalat [justice] Association
  • Association for Victims of Violence

The Regime also operates a number of anti-MEK propaganda outlets, where they distribute fake news about the MEK on a daily basis and erase MEK’ history and achievements
