INU - In a meeting that took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley discussed her country’s three goals in Yemen during a meeting with Yemeni President Abed Rabbu Mansour Hadi in New York on Tuesday.

“Today, we are working to achieve three goals (in Yemen): combating terrorism, ending Iranian interference in Yemen and the region, supporting the legitimate government and strengthening its work; and we will continue to support Yemen and we will not abandon it,” Haley said.

Hadi stated, “The support of the United States is required to eliminate terrorism in its various forms, including terrorism of the Houthi and Saleh militias, which have swept the cities, killed children and women and displaced innocent people in an attempt to implement external agendas.”

According to Yemen’s official news agency, Hadi and Haley talked about “a number of issues and topics of common interest” and praised “strong relations” between Yemen and the United States. As well, they discussed a strategic partnership to end Iranian attempts to influence the region.

The meeting came within the framework of strengthening aspects of coordination between the two countries in international forums. The two leaders also discussed the humanitarian and relief aspects in the wake of the control imposed by militias on the port of Hodeidah and Sanaa airport. Haley, for her part, said she was satisfied with the outcome.

Haley has become one of the most powerful women in the Trump administration. There's little doubt that she will continue to rise in Trump's Cabinet.

Another meeting was held on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, where obstacles facing the delivery of aid to Yemen was discussed. The assistant Secretary General of the Riyadh-based Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for Political Affairs and Negotiations, Dr. Abdulaziz bin Hamad Al-Owaisheq, chaired the Tuesday meeting for the Donors Coordination Group on Yemen, which was hosted by the Secretariat General of the GCC in New York.

The Donors Coordination Group on Yemen was established in July 2017. It includes senior donors, with its chairmanship rotating among the GCC secretariat general, the European Union and the United Nations. Humanitarian and developmental assistance offered by the GCC to Yemen through affiliated organizations and the United Nations over the last ten years, was discussed at the meeting.
