He has been highly critical of President Trump’s treatment of Iran and he accused the President of trying to isolate Iran further.
The former Secretary of State said that he has met with the Foreign Minister of Iran, Javad Zarif, on a number of occasions during the past year.

His comments came during an interview with Hugh Hewitt. He said that since leaving office he has met up with the foreign minister at a conference in Norway and at the World Economic Forum in Munich. During the interview he said: “And it appears right now as if the administration is hell bent for leather determined to pursue a regime change strategy to bring the economy down and try to isolate further.

And I would simply caution that the United States historically has not had a great record in regime change strategies, number one. And number two, that makes it very difficult, if not impossible, for any Iranian leader to sit down and negotiate anything, because they’re not going to do it in a capitulatory, you know, situation.

It’s just not going to happen.”
When Kerry was in office, the Obama administration pursued a policy of appeasement. Obama promised that the Iranian regime would become more moderate as concessions were made.

He even turned a blind eye to the many acts of belligerence that Iran blatantly and brazenly carried out. He even ignored his own red lines with regards to the use of chemical weapons in Syria which was and is being supported by the Iranian Regime.

Instead of moderating its behaviour, the Iranian regime became emboldened. Yet still, the Obama administration still went ahead with the nuclear deal and it conceded to Iran on many issues that should have been tightly restricted.

When President Trump took office he spoke about the disaster of a deal that was made and pointed out that Iran’s belligerence is as bad as ever. He named the Iran as the number one state sponsor of terrorism and said that he will not be accepting its malign acts.

John Kerry’s meetings with the Iranian foreign minister and his public comments about the current U.S. administration’s treatment of Iran undermine any positive action that has been taken.

The Obama administration had the perfect opportunity to address many of Iran’s actions including its blatant disregard for human rights, its involvement in war crimes, its ballistic missile program, its support of terrorist proxies and militias, its spread of terrorism and sectarianism, to name only some of its malign acts.

The Obama administration blew its chance to bring support to the people of Iran and to change the course of the conflicts in the region. At least the Trump administration is trying to undo the mistakes of his predecessors. And at least Trump realises that the regime’s belligerence is essential to its survival.

It is not a something that it will ever be able to change.
