Leaders across the world have called on Iran to reconsider its decision.

Yasutoshi Nishimura, the Japanese Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary said that Japan is concerned about the news and urges the Iranian regime to reconsider its decision.

Nishimura said that Japan is monitoring the situation and is “seriously concerned. He said that Japan urges Iran to “return to its commitment under the agreement” with immediate effect, adding that it should “avoid any further steps that would undermine the nuclear agreement”.

U.S. President Donald Trump warned Iran that it needs to be “careful”. In a message on Twitter on 3rd July, Trump said: “Be careful with the threats, Iran. They can come back to bite you like nobody has been bitten before!”

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also tweeted a message, warning about the Iran threat. He said: “Iran’s latest expansion of its nuclear program will lead to further isolation and sanctions. Nations should restore the longstanding standard of no enrichment for Iran’s nuclear program. Iran’s regime, armed with nuclear weapons, would pose an even greater danger to the world.”

On Sunday, the European Union also called on Iran to halt all actions that would undermine the JCPOA. It also said that it is concerned about the country’s announcement and said that it has set up a joint commission to examine the situation.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini’s spokesperson said: “We strongly urge Iran to stop and reverse all activities inconsistent with its commitments (…) We are in contact with the other JCPoA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) participants regarding the next steps under the terms of the JCPoA, including a Joint Commission.”

The French Foreign Ministry issued a statement in response to Iran’s announcement. It said that France in in touch with the other signatories to the deal in order to de-escalate tensions. French President Emmanuel Macron also commented on Iran’s announcement, confirming that he will consider any breach as a violation of the nuclear agreement. He said that Iran has been given a deadline of 15th July for dialogue to be resumed, however he has not specified what would happen after this date.

A spokesperson for the Foreign office of the United Kingdom also said that it would be considering Iran’s actions as a violation of the terms of the JCPOA and called upon the country to reverse its activities. The spokesperson said: “While the UK remains fully committed to the deal, Iran must immediately stop and reverse all activities inconsistent with its obligations. We are coordinating with other JCPOA participants regarding the next steps under the terms of the deal, including a Joint Commission.”

Germany, the third EU signatory of the deal echoed the sentiments of the other Europeans, reiterating its concern regarding Iran’s activities.
