Trump: Iran-US Nuclear Deal Could Lead to a ‘Nuclear Holocaust’

Mr. Trump said that the deal is the worst he’d seen in entire life. “I’ve been making lots of wonderful deals, great deals. That’s what I do. Never, ever, ever in my life have I seen any transaction so incompetently negotiated as our deal with Iran. And I mean never,” he said, addressing the crowd who had gathered for his rally in Washington, D.C., at the bottom of the Capitol last September.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), more commonly known as the ‘Iran-US Nuclear Deal’ has been under much scrutiny since it came into effect in July last year. The deal was signed under Barack Obama’s presidency and aims to “limit Tehran’s nuclear ability in return for lifting international oil and financial sanctions,” as explained by The New York Times.

One of the key issues with the agreement is that it’s difficult to ensure that Iran plays by the rules of the deal, given its dubious history of human rights abuse and its neglect towards other internationally recognised regulations. Considering “the deal’s sweeping terms as well as Iran’s history of evasions, stonewalling and illicit procurements,” it is especially important for countries to remain extra-vigilant when inspecting whether the deal is being carried out.

The deal was accompanied by secret negotiations between Iran and the US who paid out more than $2 billion to Iran, to ensure that the notorious regime releases American citizens who were being held, hostage. This gives even more cause for concern that Iran may be getting away with breaching the terms of the deal.

Mr. Trump’s hostility towards the Nuclear Deal has been met with significant support. Jeff Sessions, who has been nominated for the post of attorney general, has publicly referred to the deal as a ‘mistake’ and expressed his strong opinions that the deal meal was a bad decision for the US politics.

The ex-mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, is also known as a firm supporter of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) that form the main opposition movement to Iran, closely affiliated with the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) that is led by president-elect Mrs Maryam Rajavi. MEK and NCRI have been fighting against the mullahs’ regime in Iran for decades, upholding the values of freedom of speech, gender equality and a democratic and secular government. Earlier this year, a Paris rally, organised by the NCRI and led by Mrs. Rajavi attracted more than 100,000 followers, showing the growing support for the movement.

Providing the claims that Mr. Trump has made regarding the Iran-US Nuclear Deal and the backing of several notable US political leaders, it is likely that the new government will hold Iran accountable for breaching the terms of the deal and watch very closely to ensure that the terms are being upheld. Mr. Trump told the NBC’s Meet the Press host Chuck Todd that the deal in its current form could “lead to a nuclear holocaust.”
