Dutch, Italian, Kuwaiti and Swedish Representatives Speak out Against Iran’s Regime at UN

United Nations General Assembly

Ann-Sofie Nilsson, the Swedish envoy, said: “Sweden, and the EU, remain steadfast supporters of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The disintegration of the agreement would be seriously damaging to the global non-proliferation regime. Recent Iranian breaches of nuclear-related limits under the JCPOA are serious setbacks in this regard. … We urge Iran to cooperate fully – and in a timely manner – with the IAEA in the implementation of its NPT (non-proliferation treaty) Safeguards Agreement.”

Gianfranco Incarnato, the Italian representative, told the First Committee of the UN General Assembly on 14 October: “We urge Iran to return to full compliance without delay and to provide the IAEA with full and timely cooperation with respect to all its safeguard-related commitments. We are ready to support initiatives aimed at de-escalating the present tensions and restoring the JCPoA’s integrity.”

The Kuwaiti representative also said the use of armed drones to launch attacks on national facilities is a source of concern. What we need is a legal framework to ensure the security of our citizens and enhance regional and international peace and security. We condemn the attacks on Saudi oil facilities. We stand in solidarity with Saudi Arabia, which faces threats that threaten not only regional stability and peace but the global economy.

Dutch envoy Robbert Gabriëlse told the meeting: “Iran’s nuclear program must remain under strict international controls for which the JCPOA is the agreed instrument. We call upon all parties to fully implement UNSC-resolution 2231, including the elements on ballistic missile-related activities.”
