Activists in Iran Campaign for Democracy and Criticise Sham Elections

They point out that the country will continue to be ruled by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei no matter who is elected to be the next president.

People around the country have been putting up posters in defiance of the farce election that is about to take place.

Members of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) have spoken about how elections in the West cannot be compared to those in Iran, pointing out that Iran is ruled by theocracy.

It is illegal in Iran to be a member of the NCRI as the Iranian government has deemed it a terrorist organisation. However, the members of the group are defiant and determined to live in a democratic country once the Iranian regime has been overthrown.

In the country’s capital there are posters with slogans calling for a regime overthrow and references to the corrupt candidates. Current president Hassan Rouhani and rival Ebrahim Raisi have histories of violence and brutality.

Rouhani, the so-called “moderate” president, has a horrifying record of executions during his time in office. Ebrahim Raisi was involved in the 1988 massacre in which more than 30,000 political prisoners were executed. He was part of the “death commission” that approved the murders.

Many NCRI members have been victim to the Iranian regime. Many have been arrested and tortured. Many others have been executed.

At the minute the opposition activists are trying to ensure that the people of Iran are one day free and are pushing to bring democracy to the country. Many of the activists say that they are taking such a risk because they owe it to those before them that made the ultimate sacrifice for the people.

The leader of the NCRI, Maryam Rajavi, said in a statement to Fox News: “This sham is an attempt to put a 21st century veneer on a medieval regime, all of whose factions pursue the same policies vis-à-vis suppression at home, export of terror abroad, the nuclear weapons program, and pilfering of the Iranian nation’s wealth.”

She praised the activists and said that they are the hope for the people that are suffering in Iran. She encouraged them to continue and said that “the overthrow of the religious dictatorship is possible and within reach”.
