Danger Lurks in Society, Iran’s State Media Say

Iran's Supreme Leader and his fear of being overthrown

In Iran’s state-run newspapers on Saturday, a common theme is an admission of the social hatred that exists for the regime and the government’s fear of the uprising. These themes can be seen in socio-economic articles. In articles related to the government’s foreign crises, the same atmosphere is also conveyed to the reader of a concern about the intensification of global isolation and the impasse of Iran’s expansionist policies.

Dangerous odors from the floor of society!

“Failed community” was the title of an article in the Sharq newspaper which acknowledged the Iranian people’s hatred of the regime and wrote:

“Rouhani is the pivot point of previous governments. Too much criticism of his government and the anger of the people against this government does not only return to his government. There is a lot of dense criticism and anger from other governments that have brought us to this situation.”

Aftab-e-Yazd newspaper in its article entitled, “Reactions to the slogan of death on Rouhani on 22 Bahman (the day of the Iran’s revolution anniversary in 1979), reflected the warnings of Hesameddin Ashna, the current advisor to Rouhani and one of the directors general of the ministry of intelligence, and warned those concerned about the future of the government:

“Experience has shown that launching spontaneous currents and organized slogans against the government are not a way to exploit the enemies and create chaos against the system. Playing with public emotions has painful consequences.

“The ugly slogan of death to Rouhani is a sign of a multi-state phenomenon and should not be simply ignored. If there is a caliphate killing, this is not the end.”

The state-run daily Iran also in an article by Mohammad Hashemi while remembering the previous protests wrote: “There is no doubt that such behaviors in any way stimulates a section of society and indirectly encourages actions such as what we saw on the 22nd Bahman (February 10, 2021). That is an example of what happened that sparked a series of dangerous protests in 2018.”

A full-scale war against the system

Concerns about the consequences of global developments and the regime’s foreign relations are a common theme in the newspapers of both ruling factions. From the story of Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf’s (Iran’s parliament speaker) failed trip to Russia to the positions of the new US administration on the Iran nuclear deal JCPOA and the positions of the three European countries against the regime.

The state-run daily Javan with the title “Biden is an opportunity or a soft threat” wrote:

“The Iranian statesman should know that when Biden speaks in his first speech about democracy and the advancement of its goals around the world, this is not a soft and friendly strategy at all. This is a full-fledged war, and what we are asked to do in the case of the JCOPA in a short is stepping back.”

Vatan-e-Amrooz daily in its article titled ‘Active Progress’ about the regime’s relations with the United States wrote: “Considering Biden’s strategy in the face of sanctions against Iran and the US’s JCPOA commitments, it shows a purposeful vision for obtaining maximum concessions from our country.”

The atmosphere of despair and stalemate of the system is high in the contents of the state newspapers. For example, Safaei Farahani, a former presidential candidate, in an interview with Shargh newspaper, stressed the need to withdraw from domestic and foreign policies, saying:

“It seems that the path that has been chosen has shown its stalemate over the past years. It is not possible to achieve the desired result with non-diplomatic literature instead of interacting with the world. If strategies do not change, first inside and then outside, one cannot hope for fundamental change.”
