The Iranian regime has been under immense pressure from the United States in the past few months. It all came to a head at the beginning of the month when the situation escalated. The U.S. appeared to be taking a bold move in deploying military resources to the Gulf. The Trump administration explained that the United States had been threatened by Iran and it that was being prepared for any eventuality. It also warned Iran that it would face “unrelenting force”.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani signed legislation on Tuesday designating all US troops in the Middle East as terrorists and calling the US government itself a sponsor of terrorism. The bill takes specific aim at the Bahrain-based US Central Command, and its signing was accompanied by a statement from Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi suggesting that violent clashes could occur between CENTOM and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

On Wednesday, Iranian officials began voicing new criticisms of the United States after the revelation of pending terrorist designation for the Muslim Brotherhood. The organization has been a driving force behind a number of violent Islamist movements throughout the region, and its designation will no doubt be embraced as long overdue by many Western experts on Middle East policy. But Iran has a long history of aligning with Islamist groups, including those that represent the opposite side of the Sunni/Shiite divide, for the sake of joint opposition to Western interests.
