Iran: Authorities Abuse of Female Political Prisoners

In a report, the Iranian opposition revealed how the government systematically violate the rights of female political prisoners.

The fundamental rights of female Iranian political prisoners are being violated by the mullahs’ regime, according to this report by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

Facing numerous political, social, and economic crises, not least growing discontent by the people and the coronavirus, the regime has increased executions, arrests, humiliating punishments, and disproportionate sentences.

Let’s look at the abuses that female Iranian political prisoners are being subjected to.

Denial of Medical Care

This is a common method of torture that the regime uses against political prisoners, but it’s much more dangerous during the coronavirus crisis. Many are denied transfer to the hospital, even if they pay for their own treatment, or removed from the hospital before full treatment can take place.

Fatemeh Mosanna, who is suffering from an infection in her intestines and an internal hemorrhage was severely ill twice in October, with prison guards at first refusing to send her to hospital.

On October 27, she was eventually sent to Taleghani Hospital for heavy intestinal bleeding, but even when a doctor said that she should remain under his supervision, guards returned her to prison on the orders of the Ministry of Intelligence and the Prosecutor Supervising Political Prisoners.

Relocation

Another form of torture is to send female political prisoners from Evin prison to prisons that do not allow the separation of prisoners based on their crimes, meaning that political prisoners are in the same ward as murderers.

This has, over October alone, affected:

  • Nasrin Sotoudeh
  • Monireh Arabshahi
  • Yasaman Ariyani
  • Elham Barmaki
  • Sakineh Parvaneh
  • Maryam Nassiri

Harassment and Intimidation

In Qarchak Prison, authorities have prevented political detainees from educating other prisoners, which led to a protest by Zahra Safaei, Parastoo Mo’ini, Forough Taghipour, Maryam Nassiri and Golrokh Iraee.

These women are put under great pressure by the authorities and violent inmates incited by the regime, which led to Safaei suffering a heart stroke.
