The European Parliament, in its plenary session, adopted a resolution addressing the systematic repression of human rights in Iran. This resolution, passed by a significant majority of 556 votes in favor, 6 against, and 42 abstentions, calls for immediate action to address ongoing human rights abuses by the Iranian regime.

Opposition to the Death Penalty

MEPs strongly reiterated their opposition to the death penalty in Iran, urging the regime to establish an immediate moratorium on its use and work towards its full abolition. The resolution specifically condemns the death sentences handed down to human rights activist Pakhshan Azizi and humanitarian worker Wrisha Moradi, calling for their immediate and unconditional release. Furthermore, it highlights the plight of at least 56 other political prisoners currently on death row.

The resolution also denounces the murder of German-Iranian citizen Jamshid Sharmahd, urging Iranian authorities to provide transparency regarding the circumstances of his death. This act has been described as a blatant disregard for international norms and human rights.

Support for Iranian Civil Society and the “Woman, Life, Freedom” Movement

The European Parliament expressed full solidarity with Iranians united under the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, which received the 2023 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. The resolution calls for increased financial and institutional support for Iranian civil society to strengthen their fight for democracy, equality, and human rights.

Hostage Diplomacy and Persecution of EU Nationals

MEPs strongly condemned Iran’s continued practice of hostage diplomacy, calling for the immediate release, repatriation, and dropping of all charges against EU nationals detained in Iran. This includes French nationals Olivier Grondeau, Cécile Kohler, and Jacques Paris, as well as Swedish-Iranian academic Ahmadreza Djalali, whose prolonged detention has been internationally criticized.

Designation of the IRGC as a Terrorist Organization

The resolution urges the Council of the European Union to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. MEPs argue that such a measure is necessary to hold the IRGC accountable for its involvement in widespread human rights violations and repressive activities. The resolution also calls for an extension of EU sanctions to include all individuals responsible for these abuses.

A Call to Action

This resolution reflects the European Parliament’s ongoing commitment to human rights and its firm stance against the Iranian regime’s oppressive policies. By addressing both the systemic repression within Iran and the regime’s treatment of EU nationals, the Parliament sends a strong message of solidarity with the Iranian people and a clear demand for accountability.
